How to Plan a Party in Your Kitchen

Recent decades have seen the birth of the designer kitchen. What was once simply an essential part of the household, has now become an integral part of the home's socializing area. Kitchens have become bigger and better, and their designs are becoming more considerate of the other functions a kitchen now needs to have.

Along with these changes, entertaining in the kitchen has become a trend. Many men and women recognize that cooking with friends or with your kids is a great way to bond and spend time together. It also gives generations a chance to pass down recipes or secrets. However, doing this can also lead to incredibly disorganized messes. So it is important to know how to plan a party in your kitchen.

The very first thing you need to do is plan the space where you will be eating or settling down once you're done cooking or while you're waiting for something to finish cooking. Many of today's kitchens have nice little breakfast nooks or a small dining space (sometimes an extension of the main counter.) Just make sure that this place is separate from the work area. Decorate it with flowers and place settings so that your guests do feel that a party is going to take place.

Next, try to get the work area organized. If you can prepare ingredients ahead of time, even better because this will save you cooking time, and give you more party time. Knowing what your friends are good at can also help because you can already think about who will do what. Alternatively, you can choose not to prepare all of these and just wing it. Sometimes it's more fun!

Third, try to plan easy to do dishes or choose to serve finger foods. These are often easier to prepare, and can easily be eaten along the way, should anyone want to take a nibble ahead of time. Some great finger foods include deviled eggs, croquettes, pigs in a blanket, canapes, and mini tacos. Also make sure you have suitable beverages, keeping water close by for those who are cooking more than the others.

Finally, remember to have a clean up station nearby. Next to the sink or on the counter of the sink is usually a good spot. Not only can you wash things off in this area, but you can also set up paper towels and rags. In the cabinet beneath the counter, or at the corner of the counter (if no cabinet is available) keep a mop and broom with adjustable handles that you can lean against the counter. Adjusting the handles to be short will help keep them out of the way and from being an eye-sore, but having them nearby will be a definite plus should anything happen!
