Cleaning Up After The Party

Preparing for a party can be an exciting and busy process. From finding the right invitations to choosing the right decorations, the planning can seem endless. But when the entire event goes off without a hitch, all of that preparation is completely worthwhile. While you are preparing for a party or event, you have the motivation of the event itself to keep you going. When all the guests leave though, you might find yourself less motivated to keep working on an event that has already happened. Yet, there is cleaning to be done and that trash will not be taking itself out anytime soon.

As you prepare for your next large event, consider hiring a maid service to help you take care of the post-party clean up. This simple step could be the difference between reflecting on how much fun you had at the party or how much work you did for the party. A maid service can make quick work of something that may take one person quite some time. Not only do many helpful hands make the work go quickly, but it also gives you the freedom to get on with your day to day responsibilities.

A one-time thorough cleaning may be the difference between being excited for your next big event, or completely dreading ever planning a party again. This type of service can be so helpful for any type of event. Whether it is a child's birthday party, a bar or bat mitzvah reception, a wedding or baby shower or any other type of event, large numbers of people can make quite a mess. Consider hiring a maid service to restore your home or entertaining space to its clean, beautiful state.

Doing Some Party Planning? How About a Luau!

Does the idea of luau party planning intimidate you? Don't let it! A luau is an incredible party especially if you are lucky enough to go to one in Hawaii. It can also be an incredible party if you hold one in your own backyard!

The decorations, the attire, the music, games, and all kinds of luau party planning supplies are all available on Luau party planning web-sites. It's really easy to set up a luau when it comes to all the "stuff" to make it look like you are in the islands.

Oddly enough, there isn't much information available about what food to serve at a luau! And what's a luau without wonderful food?

Let's discuss some great food that you could serve at your own luau!

Beverages

Really, how could you have a luau without some hokey but incredibly delicious beverages? It would be silly! So buy some paper umbrellas and saw the tops off some coconuts (if you're really ambitious.) Or maybe you could just buy some inexpensive tropical drink glasses.

Here are a couple of classic island drink recipes to try:

Piña Colada

1/2 cup crushed ice
6 fluid ounces pineapple juice
2 fluid ounces rum
1 fluid ounce coconut cream
1 fluid ounce heavy cream
1 pineapple wedge
1 maraschino cherry

(Add an ounce of Blue Curacao and call it a Blue Hawaiian)

In a blender, combine ice, pineapple juice, rum, coconut cream and heavy cream. Blend until smooth. Pour into glass and garnish with pineapple wedge and cherry.

Mai Tai

2 oz. Light rum
2 oz. pineapple juice
2 oz. Orange juice
1 oz. cranberry juice
½ oz. grenadine
1 oz. dark rum
½ oz triple sec

Blend all ingredients together and pour over ice in a tall glass. Serve with a pineapple slice on the rim of the glass.

Appetizers

Shrimp-Pineapple Pupus are easy and tasty? Here's the recipe.

Shrimp-Pineapple Pupus

24 large or colossal shrimp, cooked, tail off
24 Dole Pineapple chunks (reserve liquid)
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp soy sauce
1/4 cup Heinz Chili Sauce
Colorful food picks

Spear one cooked shrimp and one pineapple chunk on each food pick, with the pineapple atop the shrimp. Cover and chill until ready to serve. Combine the remaining ingredients, mix well and serve as a dipping sauce.

Luaus are not formal affairs. A healthy and delicious appetizer is fresh fruit. And it can double as a decoration. Here's how:

Halve a pineapple and cut out the inside.
Cut the pineapple into cubes and spear them on toothpicks.
Then top each pineapple spear with a maraschino cherry.
Turn the pineapple "shell" halves upside down and decorate with the speared pineapple and cherries.
Surround the pineapple with tropical fruits of your choice. Cut kiwis, mango, and melon look great!

Main Dish and Sides

If you've been to a luau in Hawaii you've had Kalua pork. That's a whole pig that's wrapped in banana leaves and roasted underground for hours and hours. If you're not that ambitious here is an easy recipe that doesn't require a shovel.

Kalua Pig

Makes 12-14 servings

5-6 pound pork butt roast

1 1/2 tablespoons Hawaiian sea salt (coarse sea salt)

1 1/2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring

Pierce the pork roast all over with the tip of a sharp knife. Place the roast in a 6 quart slow cooker and rub the salt all over the meat. Drizzle the liquid smoke over the meat.
Cook with the cover for 16-20 hours on low heat. Turn the roast over one time after about 8 hours. When the meat easily shreds with a fork it is ready.
Remove the meat from the slow cooker and shred with two forks. Add drippings from the slow cooker as needed to moisten the meat.

Fried Rice is a perfect and traditional luau accompaniment to serve with the Kalua Pig. And if you really want to make it reminiscent of Hawaii, add a little crushed pineapple to the finished dish. A salad would be a great addition to this meal. Garnish is with flowers like nasturtiums or orchids.

Quick Fried Rice

2 to 3 tbsp vegetable oil

1 cup diced chicken, ham or shrimp

6 cups steamed rice

1 to 1-1/2 cups diced cooked vegetables (peas, carrots, water chestnuts, etc.)

2 to 3 tsp soy sauce

1-1/2 tsp sesame oil

1/2 to 1 tsp salt, to taste

3 eggs, beaten

4 tbsp thinly sliced green onion or 1/2 cup of crushed pineapple

Heat oil in large skillet or wok.
Sauté meat for 30 seconds on high heat and remove from the pan.
Cook beaten eggs and stir they scramble into small pieces and remove from pan.
Return meat to pan and add rice.
Reduce heat to medium and cook approximately 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
Stir in vegetables, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt and cooked eggs.
Cook 2 additional minutes.
Sprinkle with green onions or crushed pineapple as a garnish.

And the best is last: Dessert

Here's a dessert that you will love! It's not hard to make and it's a lot of fun.

Volcano Cake

1 cake mix - any flavor - mix as directed on the box

Grease and flour a medium sized round metal mixing bowl - about 2 quart size (or any oven-proof round bowl.)
Mix and bake the cake mix as directed. Keep an eye on it. Baking times will differ, depending on the brand you use and the exact size of the bowl.
Test the cake with a toothpick. When it's done the toothpick will come out clean.
Cool in the bowl for ten minutes and then unmold the cake on a cookie sheet.
Cut or scoop a cup or so of cake out of the top of the cake to give it that authentic volcano look!

Meringue:

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees

8 egg whites

1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar

1/8 teaspoon salt

1 cup white sugar

Beat the egg whites with the remaining ingredients until stiff peaks form.
Frost the cake with meringue, leaving a depression in the center of the cake. Make sure that the depression is covered with some meringue. Have fun making swirls and points with the meringue!
Return the cake to the oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until the meringue is lightly browned.
Remove the cake from the oven and cool.
Transfer it to a big cake board (heavy cardboard) that you've covered with foil or pretty paper.
Decorate the cake board with luau "finds" - more paper umbrellas, seashells, fruit - use your imagination!

Lava: (Yes, lava)

A bag of frozen sweetened raspberries of strawberries. If you can't find sweetened you can add some sugar to taste.

Let the fruit thaw and whirl it in a blender to liquefy.
Just before serving, pour the lava down the sides of the cake.
Put a few sparklers in the top of the cake and light! Voila! Instant, and delicious, volcano!

See, luau party planning is a breeze. You can do it!

What to Consider Before Selecting Your Dinnerware

Dinner is one of the important meal times when most people host their friends and families as a celebration of an event. Most of the families sit around and bond the dinner time while talking about their days. This is why you should get the best crockery to use during dinner time. So, some factors need to consider when shopping for dinnerware.

Here are a few considerations when you are picking out the right kind of dinner set to fit your needs.

Design

The first consideration should be the design of the dinnerware sets. You can find different varieties of dinnerware set that you can use to decorate the dinner table. Comfortable Number

Dinnerware should come in complete sets. These are available in different numbers. Most of the dinnerware sets consist of four pieces. This consists of a dinner plate, a salad plate, a soup bowl and a teacup. You have to get ones that can be used comfortably without a problem. It is always advisable to get an extra set especially when hosting people so that they do not run out in the middle of a festivity. The stress will include the beating it will get from other utensil and the constant heat it will be exposed to from the microwave and the heat of the food itself). It should also have a non-reactive surface since it will be facing a lot of chemicals and cleaning liquid from daily washing cycle. Always consider the maintenance of the dishes while buying it. Make sure that it is dishwasher friendly and is durable.

The choice of dinnerware should be heavily influenced by how it is to be utilized within the home. As well as colors and patterns, shape is an important consideration for those choosing dinnerware. Different dinnerware sets have different sizes. Some are bigger than others. It is important that you take the measurements of your cupboard before setting off for the stores.

Wedding Venue Styling - Chair Covers For Weddings

Chair covers for your wedding may be low down on your list of priorities when planning your big day. But, chair covers are a very critical part of decorating your wedding venue. You have probably already thought about the cake and the table covers but wedding chair covers should not be an afterthought, disregarded or left until the last minute.

First contemplate that you will have more chairs in the room than any other type of furniture. It really is different when you look at only one chair as opposed to looking at one hundred or 2 hundred. They will cover a significant part of the room. It is essential that the colour and uniformity of your chairs is in fitting with the rest of the venue styling and décor. There is no point spending hours agonising over which table covers to select and disregarding the chairs that go around your impeccably styled table. Why spoil the visual impact of your wedding venue with unappealing, boring, unmatching chairs that do not match in with your theme and colour scheme?

Lots of women are shocked and unhappy when they see their finished wedding reception venue for the reason that they didn't think about the importance of their wedding chair covers. On numerous occasions, retailers are contacted at the last minute for an emergency supply and fitting. Chair covers for weddings have a dramatic impact, don't make this oversight! Here is a rough guide to picking and purchasing your wedding chair covers.

By now you should have finalised your guest list, the initial thing to work out is how many chairs or chair covers for your wedding that you will require. You might want to order a few extra covers, around 10 maybe in case of extra guests or damages. It's always better to be prepared.

When you know how many you want to order, you need to check what size you'll need, consult with your venue or chair hire company. A good wedding decoration retailer will be familiar with popular venues in the area or they may ask you to provide a picture of the chair to confirm. You must make certain that you get a nice, neat fit. Will all the chairs be the same size? At times, chairs on the head table or those for the bride and groom are bigger.

Next, choose the colour and style of chair cover. The most popular way to cover your wedding chairs is to choose a neutral colour like white, ivory or even black. Then choose an accessory such as a sash or a bow which matches your colour scheme. This way you get a little colour but it is not over powering. You can also go for standard, less expensive covers, made from cotton or lycra then have a more plush decoration such as silk or jewel encrusted. Bear in mind, it only takes a hint of colour to design a whole new look from the most simple white.

Instead, you can choose to make a statement with your chairs and go for a bold coloured cover. This can look fantastic but be aware that bold colours will be more difficult to source and more expensive. Make sure you get the right colour match, ask for swatches and take expert advice.

Now you know exactly what you want, you're ready to buy the chair covers for your wedding. When you speak to companies that specialise in chair covers for weddings, you will most likely be given the option to rent or purchase your covers. This depends on your budget but bear in mind that nowadays, simple white chair covers can be just as cheap to buy as to hire.

What Should You Wear To A Beach Wedding?

If you're planning a beach wedding, you're no doubt looking forward to having your ceremony on the sand with the ocean as a backdrop. What could be better than that? Even if you're hosting a very casual beachside ceremony, every wedding includes all sorts of planning, from location to flowers to clothing. Since beach weddings provide a luxurious yet casual setting for a wedding, it makes perfect sense to pair them with the light, causal clothing that seems appropriate to beaches.

For the Men

Guys you have quite a few options, and most of them are a lot more comfortable than pulling on a tuxedo or a stiff business suit. You'll have the luxury of having a suit that makes you look good and feel relaxed. Consider a linen suit in a white or off white color. These suits are comfortable and earth friendly. Best of all, these suits are lightweight and breathable, so you won't be sweating from the heat. Hemp is another alternative, and these suits are often similar in appearance and price.

Other bridal parties create a festive atmosphere with Hawaiian floral shirts, which come in an array of color palettes from bright to subdued shades. Pastel colored shirts are also a possibility, as are ties, although ties are certainly not a requirement for beach weddings. For an added flair, you might consider a Panama hat or a fedora, as well as a colorful floral lei. Sandals are appropriate depending on the overall feeling of your wedding, but you can also go barefoot or look into lighter shoes that will be easy to move in while you're on the beach.

If you're not part of the bridal party, take a cue from the wedding invitation and the location. For most weddings on the beach, slacks and a polo shirt would be acceptable. Depending on the theme or style of the wedding, you may want to venture into the realm of something a bit more fun, such as Hawaiian print shirts.

For the Women

As with weddings held indoors, the bride is the center of attention at a beach wedding. Both she and her bridesmaids should look for dresses that are suitable for the environment and the overall mood of the ceremony. Beaches call to mind light and breezy afternoons and a certain carefree attitude. Most brides opt for a light, gauzy dress, though others decide upon a more traditional and formal wedding gown. It's probably a good idea to avoid a long train, since it'll probably only get sandy or wet. Off the shoulder dresses are always popular for beachside weddings, and they provide a nice element of style and class while keeping you comfortable and looking spectacular. Many women opt for colorful dresses for a beach ceremony, rather than the traditional white, to take advantage of a tropical color palette.

As far as shoes, you might consider some of the same options as the men. Sandals, bare feet, and low shoes are all good choices. You'll want to avoid anything that is too high or has too much of a heel, as these options are quite formal and perhaps a bit impractical for beach environments. Add a floral lei instead of a veil for a particularly festive and tropical touch.

Picnic Blankets Versus Picnic Tables

Does your family like to go picnicking? If so, are you advocates of picnic blankets or picnic tables? Regular picnic goers have their favourites, you know! Some picnickers are hard and fast picnic blanket people while others like to sit at a picnic table. In this piece we will take a look at the pros and cons of picnic blankets and picnic tables.

The first thought is where are you going to hold this picnic? Is it going to be in your garden, in the country or on the beach? Picnic tables and their seats do not settle very well in sand, so unless you can nail your table and chairs to a set of old skis, you will probably find it easier to use blankets on the beach. In this case, use something that the sand sticks to like wool, because it cuts down on the sand drifting into the sandwiches.

The next consideration is, what was the weather like the day before? That is, is the grass likely to be damp or even muddy? If it is likely to be wet, then you will not want to be sitting on wet blankets and wet grass, although you could lay a waterproof sheet like a tarpaulin under the blanket. However, if it is likely to be muddy, I would be in favour of postponing the picnic until a drier time.

The next consideration is the fitness of the crowd you are going to be picnicking with. Are they physically capable of sitting on the ground and getting back up again? Numerous elderly people are not, neither are the overweight or people with bad backs or bad knees. If you want to take blankets anyway, you will have to provide seats for these people and they can eat off their knees.

Another consideration is the amount of guests that have been invited. Picnic tables usually seat four or six; six or eight at a shove, so if you are expecting twenty people, that is quite a few tables and chairs. Not many households can run to four or five picnic tables and twenty seats, but you could consider having the adults seated at tables and the children on blankets.

If you just can not get hold of the required number of tables and seats, maybe some of your guests could bring their own to supplement what you already have. Most people are fairly willing to chip in if they have anything you can use.

Whether you choose picnic blankets or picnic chairs depends on several factors including your own personal preference, but it is almost certainly true to generalize that a younger group of picnicker will probably prefer a traditional picnic on a blanket, while an older group will prefer sitting at picnic tables.

Entertaining at Home Can Be Fun

Although the thought of entertaining at home can be daunting, it will turn out to be fantastic if you plan well. You need to decide if there is an occasion for you to invite people to your home or if you are simply having a party. Whatever the occasion, you will need to think of several different factors, including the guests, food, drink dinnerware, decorations and invitations. You have to consider your guests and how available everyone will be on any chosen night.

You need to ensure that you ask when a good time is for all of your guests as often work and family commitments can get in the way. Also, if there is a big sporting event on or other parties, you may find that your guest list is shortened. You should also think about what day of the week to have your party and what times it will be, people like to have an end time so they do not feel rude if they leave too early. When it coming to the planning of your event you can never do too much and you will need to be very organized.

You will need to think about how many guests you have coming and what and where will be the best place to feed them. If it is a small gathering then a sit down meal is fine but if there are many people invited then you may need to consider a buffet so that people can stand and eat comfortably. You should consider what food will suit the people who are invited and then decide what you can prepare and cook with ease. There are many different finger foods that will suit you and your guest that look and taste amazing.

The key to a successful event is not being stuck in the kitchen for the whole time and be out with your guests. They have, after all, come to see you and although the food and drink may be amazing, there is no point hosting a party if you are not joining in. Never be afraid to ask for help and you can involve the kids by getting them to take drinks orders and carry dirty plates and glasses to the kitchen. No one minds helping out when you are entertaining at home.

You need to ensure that you have food and drink for everyone so variety is essential although your wine choices may be stunning not everyone drinks wine. Having a selection of drinks will ensure that everyone is happy throughout the whole party. You can be as elaborate or simple as you want when planning to entertain at home and there are no limits. You need to think about the event and your budget and then decide what you want to spend.

Even small gatherings at home can be amazing events if you have the right company, great food, good drink and plenty to do. Thinking and being prepared for every eventuality will ensure that your party is a success. You will love being the hostess so much that you will do it time and time again.

How to Make a Festive Dinner Table Part 2

This is part 2 and final part of my mini series How to arrange a dinner party

Starting off with a festive colored drink can liven up a party quickly. Ask your local mixologist about making your color of choice (and have it taste great). When you serve these drinks, the glass colors should match, but you can use different sized glasses to your guests.

During dinner, give your wine glass type a thought. There are special glasses for white and red wines. White wine glasses are normally a little smaller than the red wine glasses. The red whine glass should not only be larger but deeper as well to allow your local connoisseur to smell the aroma of the wine. Both glasses should be thin and stand on a relatively high foot which gives it an elegant impression. Always have an extra glass at each plate for beer, soda or water.

Every nice dinner table needs a bouquet of fresh flowers. During the week it's great to have preserved flowers or silk flowers-if they are nicely done, but for your dinner party fresh flowers are a must. To make your seafood dinner more authentic, you can place some sea weed, shells and even some sand throughout the table in front of the plates. To throw some seasonal flavors in, go pick some yellow, red and orange colored leaves and place them directly on the table. A couple small tree branches, with or without leaves, can also give the table a nice feel. And finally, always have lighted candles on the table and soft music in the back ground.

If you want to add a little extra excitement to your dinner party, sit boy/girl/boy/girl side-by-side as well as opposite sides of the table. And this is the important part, split up the married couples!.

Never place husband and wife together. Why? Married couples already know each other's opinions in and out. By separating them they both have a chance to express themselves and learn more about new people and their opinions. (The only ones you don't split up are engaged couples.) When all the guests are finally sitting around the table and some wine is served, its time for the host or hostess to make a toast and say a few welcoming words like: "Me and my wife are so glad to see all of you here tonight. We hope that the food taste excellent and that you all will enjoy the evening. Cheers!!

How to Make a Festive Dinner Table Setting and Get a Party You and Your Friends Will Enjoy!

There are a few important things to do when arranging a dinner table. First, try to find a theme for the dinner, then put out the proper settings and decorations, and finally you will need to set the mood. There are many themes to use for a successful dinner party; Italian Festival, Mexican Mania, European Foods, Seafood Frenzy, or Seasonal to name a few. Let's say that you are planning a sea food dinner with crabs, shrimp and fish.

After Martha Stewart has helped you with the recipes, you can start decorating with lobster, sea shell, or other marine motifs on your napkins, glasses and place mats. If you want to use a table cloth, use a solid colored one that matches the color in your place mats or plates. Napkins should always be of fabric and never paper. A new trend is to use your fancy kitchen towels as napkins. There are some very popular ones with different kitchen and food motives or just the classic "check type" squares in red and white or blue and white.

And after dinner, you can use them to dry the dishes as well! Putting out your fine china is at your discretion and would depend on the occasion and the motif you have chosen. Sticking with our seafood theme, to really make your table setting a winner, try to find china with a nautical theme-a lobster plate with a lobster on it makes for a great conversation piece! As with everything, dinner plates are getting bigger and bigger.

Even the manufacturers of dishwashers have noticed and are now building washers with adjustable space between the baskets to accommodate our big appetites. If your china is of the normal size, a nice addition is to find a larger bottom plate that is only used for decoration. You can find them in pewter, gold or silver metal (imitations) and even leather. This small addition can really give your table a more elegant and impressive look. Now that we have our linens and china in place, let's move on to the cutlery.

The silver ware, of course, does not have to be made of silver. Today's stainless steel is as elegant and accepted as the silver our parents used (and much easier to take care of-no polishing!). The fork, goes without saying, is placed to the left of the plate while the knife and spoon are placed to the right. If you serve more than one dish (including salad) you should have another fork and knife set placed alongside the others. The dessert utensils are placed on the top of the plate. If you are actually serving seafood, there are special forks and knives which make it easier to dig into the shellfish. They have a long flat spoon on one side and a short two pronged digger on the other; it is the fancy version of a "spork". This is part one of my mini series of articles about arranging a dinner party for friends.

1950's Costumes Continue To Be A Hot Choice For Costume Parties

It doesn't necessarily matter much precisely how speedily time moves forward, it is even now easy for virtually all individuals to visualize the 50's in all their wonder. 1950's clothes and 1950 dresses truly seem to take everyone back to a bit more innocent time period that nobody desires to forget about.

Fifties clothes, in particular 1950's dresses, persist to serve as the impetus for a sizable number of 1950s costumes for Halloween night and all year long. Starting from television shows like Happy Days that had us rocking night and day to the remarkable tracks which had almost everyone attending sock hops in poodle skirts, and the largely fashionable saddle shoes, fifties costumes give you a very good way to let appreciation for the past, returning you once more to an era that were much more uncomplicated and naive. Leather jackets along with white tees are not just for the Mr. Fonzerelli, though, and Grease movie costumes that enable us to play our favorite T-Bird or Pink Lady are always fashionable. Grease is especially popular today with all the revival Grease plays on and off Broadway.

It may perhaps be very easy to seize the look and feel of fifties clothes Almost all guys tend to be really ecstatic at the possibility of sporting blue jeans, a white tee, along with a leather jacket and yet satisfying the need of being "in costume". Convenience and frugileness constantly happen to be fashionable choices. How can 50's costumes turn out to be anything but entertaining, due to the fact this was the time period Rock and roll was in fact created? While you pause to consider the amount of awesome performances came out from the 1950's which had almost everyone dancing their way through the nights, it is no wonder that 1950's costumes continue to stay well-liked countless years later. the 1950's ushered in adjustment into the music of the entire world that has certainly by no means kicked the bucket, and the melodies from the time proceed to be the soundtrack of existence nowadays.

Truth be told there just is not a man or woman just about anywhere who doesn't appreciate the fifties clothes Elvis Presley used during his live performances, especially the intricate Elvis Presley costumes he put on during the later days during his Hawaii live performance and Vegas stint. The 1950's were definitely a period of transformation in different ways than the music industry; the country incorporated a pair of states, Hawaii and our most Northern state Alaska, and also it had been in the fifties that McDonald's had been first opened up.

Don't forget about exactly how accepted it had been to grease your head of hair straight back during the 1950's, and no fifties costume would be complete without a dark-colored hair comb and a little hair oil to give you that Kool Kat look. It truly does not make any difference exactly what event you could be setting up to celebrate; when you don a fifties costume, you will certainly be determined to rock 'n roll all night long (hence get your glad rags on and join me hon, we'll have a little fun until the clock strikes one....

The Artist and His Mother

Of all art related articles and submissions so far, I have found this one to be the most trying. I feel the art textbook simply do not do justice to our modern artists, as there are many that would have been better represented in the final chapters of our art books. For this topic I have selected a work by Arshile Gorky entitled "The Artist and his Mother".

The artist's life is a trail of tragedy and death present a major topic in many of his art pieces and a tragic life it was. From the burning of his art studio, his bout with cancer, a broken neck, paralysis of his painting arm and finally the departure of his wife and children, the events simply proved too much for him. In 1948 at the young age of 44 Gorky committed suicide by hanging himself in his Connecticut home.

This artist from Connecticut provided an active inspirational influence upon Abstract Expressionism. In most of his work he has endeavored to display the suffering he had experienced by way of the Armenian genocide. This was particularly true of the painting which we are now discussing. We can see past artist influences here at work as we find various traits reminiscent of Cézanne and Picasso.

In the "Artist and His Mother" the painter attempts to provide a memorable image of his departed mother. This painting was actually based upon not only Gorky's memories but an old photograph taken years before. Here we see him standing next to his mother. There are two versions of this painting in existence, one being located in Washington DC. We witness a young man standing next to an older lady in front of an empty window. There are no furnishings to be seen in the room. We have to ask ourselves what secrets this painting holds from the painter.

In analyzing this work of art we first notice that it demonstrates Gorky's tremendous loss which he experienced when his mother died. The lines of the painting are fluid and dull as if they are telling us that they could disappear at any moment in time. The artist's brush has crossed the barrier of life and death as he displays the cold, analogous, low-key colors to record his subdued feelings. His mothers face appears unnatural and presents a stone like appearance as if she was a statue or represented a headstone. The loose, unstable shape of the ladies ghost white, flowing dress furthers his proof that his mother is really not physically at his side. The body of his mother as painted upon the canvas presents a vision of flatness in composition indicating someone who may have died and is no longer part of the earthly plane while the rough, grainy texture gives an uncanny feel that all is not well.

Has he succeeded in conveying his tortured feelings from his homeland and his departed mother? He certainly has. We see Gorky standing next to his mom in his formal clothing as if attending a funeral and carefully extending a pink flower towards his mother. Perhaps this is a flower being presented to her at her coffin either way with her being dead there is no response seen from her face or body. We can notice the sadness being displayed upon his face as he glances towards his mother. I perceive this sadness as related to his inability to give her the flower he currently holds.

Although the original photograph was taken with a van, the background of the painting is just about indiscernible. He has successfully taken an old black and white photo and transferred it with cubistic planes, color, and a measure of animation but unfortunately he has fails to revive his dead mother back into his memories. He has created a brown square window directly behind his mother. This window however is so opaque that one can not make out any features within the glass. This is further indication that his mother's landscape is long gone and never to return again.

Digital Truth

In its infant stages the art of photography may have been innocent and true however, over the years it has slowly been contaminated and changed. Shortly after its inception the photograph was subject to "touch-up" actions meant to enhance the image photographed. This is much the same as it is today with digital photography.

I have found that on occasions, I have touched up or modified a photo simply because I desired to stress a particular point on my website. It was not meant as a demurring intent or as a means of being vindictive but merely to illustrate a fine point in the discussion.

With this said it is easy to imagine how the art of digital photography could become embroiled in various arguments based upon its ability to truthfully record actual events. We have the technology today to change any photo to look like something it is not. It would not involve a drastic amount of effort to place me in a position where I would be enjoying last week's ball game with Elvis or seeing me in a "kissing" position with Marilyn Monroe. These images which we view may not be completely honest and true however it would appear by all aspect as an actual event.

As indicated in a recent PBS Documentary entitled "American Photography: A Century of Images" we can see how images were manipulated in the past and it is likely that they will be so modified in the future as well. It isn't a matter of if the digital age has brought an end to truth in photos as much as how much. It is easier and quicker now then ever before to modify photos. The light seen at the end of the tunnel however shows that a trained expert can usually pick out these fakes in no time at all. In this respect, I disagree with the article when they state that "it is not easy to identify the fakes". In respect however of the article, I must agree with the author about the lack of footprints for digital photos. No negative means no proof, in all reality.

I personally do not perceive a drastic change from our "business as usual" when it comes to photos. It merely takes some prudent knowledge and detective work to note the fakes from the real. As the technology gets even more sophisticated we are likely to witness an increase in the number of fakes which we view in public galleries.

Charlotte Salt Biography

Charlotte Salt is a typical English Rose, young and beautiful, but she has done what a lot or older actresses have failed to do. She has managed to conquer America and gain popularity both sides of the Atlantic and she is still only 26-years-old.

She knew what she wanted from an early age, attending a drama club at her local theatre-in-the round, the Victoria Theatre, once or twice a week after school.

It was through this drama club she got her first break at the age of 13-years-old. A TV crew came to the North of England to find a young cast for a television series "A Land of Plenty" The director Hettie Macdonald auditioned the drama group for improvisation skills rather than text, due to the ages of the potential cast.

But Charlotte stood out and after a series of auditions she landed the role of the teenage Laura and her younger sister, Abbie Salt got the part of the younger Laura in her early life.

The demanding role landed her a top agent who sent her out for auditions and her next job was playing Sasha Tracey in the BBC2 series "The Whistle Blower". She had to play someone born and raised in London and was sent to a dialect coach to get her to drop her Northern twang.

She had parts in episodes of "The Inspector Lynley Mysteries" and "The Bill" before she landed the role in 2003 which brought her to the attention of millions of television viewers. She was cast as Helen Gilder in the BBC 1 production of "Born and Bred" which she played for four seasons.

She left the show in 2005 with her sights set in America, but instead she got the lead in a European horror movie shot in Madrid. It was the most difficult shoot she had ever done as the filming took place in December and there were several underwater stunts which were shot at night in the freezing cold lakes.

Still determined to conquer America she had the added problem of not being able to get a visa until she got a job. Her first role on American television was on "Entourage" the highly successful HBO series which gave her the work permit she needed and that led to her guest starring opposite Oscar-winning actress Faye Dunaway in "CSI".

Her biggest break on came when she was cast to play British heiress Gillian Parsons in the ABC television show "Wildlife", which she played for two seasons.

Wedding Invitations Checklist

When planning a wedding, there are a lot of pieces of information that need to be given to each guests so they know what to do and what to expect for the event. The first step to be sure that everything is covered is to compile a list of the information for the specific event, and then proceed with arranging it. Keep in mind that spacing is often limited, especially considering the amount of information that must be extended to guests for such an important occasion.

Greeting: It is customary to begin invitations with a cordial greeting such as "Please join us" or "You are cordially invited to."
Parent/Host Names: In the case of wedding invitations, the host names are most often incorporated into the greeting, as they are generally the parents of a bride/groom that are hosting the event (ex. "Please join Mr. & Mrs. Smith" or "Mr. & Mrs. Smith cordially invite you to").
Couple's Names: The names can be combined with "and," or with any manner of wording that reads fluidly. Full names are always used (middle names optional).
Date: The day of the week, month, date, and year are generally all given.
Ceremony Time: This time indicates when the ceremony begins. Guests should arrive in advance.
Ceremony Place Name: The full name of the location, as well as any details such as the room of the event should be included.
Ceremony Place Address: The street address in general should be included. Depending on the guest list, the city, state, or zip may be optional. For example, if there are no out-of-town guests, it is unnecessary to indicate the state and zip code.
Reception Time: If the reception immediately follows the ceremony, it is still important to include "Reception to follow" in the wording. If the reception is being held on a different date, be sure to include BOTH dates, else send multiple invitations.
Reception Place Name: If the reception is being held at a different location, be sure to specify the name and room name if applicable. Otherwise, if it is at the same location a room name will work (ex. "Reception to follow in the Ballroom")
Reception Place Address: If the reception is at a different location than the ceremony, then the address should also be provided. If it is at the same location, the name will suffice.
Reply Cards: These are meant to help the guest communicate attendance to the host. The cards can be easily compiled as they are received, to avoid confusion of taking calls and missing messages.
Reply Date: Including a reply date gives guests a deadline that will be necessary to inform vendors of final head counts and arrangements.
Reply Options: Include options for guests to select whether or not they will be attending, and also if they will be bringing any guests.
Menu Cards: For plated dinners, guests will need to select the meal they prefer. Menu cards are used similar to reply cards for the guests to make their meal selections.
Menu options & number of guests: Include each dish available to the guests along with a brief description. The description need not be as detailed as might be found on a normal menu.
Self addressed stamped reply envelope: An envelope for a reply card and menu card, if applicable, should be included. It is best to have the envelope pre-addressed and stamped to provide maximum convenience to guests. They need only make their selections and put the envelope in the mailbox with no further hassle.

How to Be Entertaining

To entertain means to give hospitality as well as to interest and amuse. If people come to your country will you know how to look after them? Will you know what kind of invitation to give them? Will you invite the visitors to your home or to a restaurant? Will you invite them to stay in your home or arrange for them to stay in a nearby hotel? Will you expect them to bring a present for you?

Ways of showing hospitality are different in every country and I have decided to concentrate on "how to be entertained" in Britain...

People might invite you to their home or to go out with them for the evening. They might invite you when they see you or by telephone. However, it is still quite common to be invited by letter or by invitation card. The invitation will tell you what the occasion is, when it is and, occasionally, what you should wear!

Reply quickly. If the occasion is small then you can reply by telephone, but if it is a big occasion it is better to reply by letter. It is kinder to do this because it helps your host to remember and to organize things. If the invitation was by formal invitation then you might like to reply in a formal way.

In Britain, it is common to be invited to someone's home rather than to a restaurant. If you are invited to a restaurant, it is because your host is very busy, cannot cook very well, or wants to give you the enjoyment of some special type of good, or perhaps often invited you home and now wants to give you a special treat!

Business visitors from other countries are often invited to their British colleagues' home, however, sometimes it may be more convenient to invite a business colleague to a restaurant.

I Should Have Been a Vegetarian

I was talking to a friend today and telling her about the first time I ever decided to have Thanksgiving at my house. I had invited thirty people for dinner and before I go any further, in the spirit of honesty, I have to admit that I'm a terrible cook. That said, it was sheer stupidity for me to invite a houseful of guests when I didn't know how to cook a turkey.

But it gets worse. The night before Thanksgiving, I put out bridge tables that went from one end of the house to the other and I put huge bed boards on each table to extend the seating capacity and covered them with beautiful hand embroidered tablecloths that had been passed down from one generation to another. The place settings were neatly aligned and my grandmother's crystal serving pieces sparkled on the tables.

The doorbell rang and when I went to answer it, there was this delivery guy from the flower shop looking all the worse for wear and tear. He handed me a gorgeous floral table arrangement and when I read the card it was from a friend who couldn't join us. The card said, "Sorry I can't be there with you but have a Happy Turkey Day."

I said, "Oh, my God. I forgot to defrost the turkey."

Anyone who has ever cooked a huge turkey to feed thirty people can appreciate how all the blood drained out of my face and my heart rate sped up so high I thought I was going to pass out when I realized that I had nothing to serve my company unless we had a miracle.

My miracle was my mother. In her calmest voice she told me to get the turkey out of the freezer and put it under cold running water. This was in the days before microwaves were invented and it seemed an impossible task that this huge frozen bird would ever be soft enough to eat.

I stayed up all night, rotating the bird under the cold running water; I only had a double sink and that meant the turkey couldn't be submerged up to its scrawny, stiff neck. I had to keep turning it. Or so I told myself.

The next morning I put the turkey in the oven. It felt soft enough to cook. My guests arrived. I put on my bravest smile and proceeded to serve everyone.

Aaaarrrrggghhh!!!! The insides were raw. The outside looked brown and edible but when it was carved, I could see the knife getting stuck inside. No hope. My guests were starved and I didn't know what to do.

Fortunately, there was someone at the table who suggested that we carve the turkey into smaller pieces and put them back into the oven at a higher temperature to cook faster. That worked. Almost.

In the years since that culinary disaster I learned a wonderful secret. For the first course, serve a huge Caesar salad with all the trimmings and French garlic bread that has been warmed in the oven and is golden brown and smells delicious. For the last course, serve a mouth-watering dessert and coffee with either Alka Seltzer or Bromo Seltzer on the side. And finally, hope that no one remembers what you served in between the first course and the last course.

Pool Table Furniture - Complete Your Game Room With Stylish Accessories

If you want to accessorize your pool table, consider completing your game room with pool table furniture.

Our game room contains a billiards table and air hockey table, as well as an old-fashioned pinball machine.

But when our friends came over, they'd have to stand and watch the games. That bugged me. I wanted our friends to come over and be comfortable, not have to lean against the walls!

You Can Shop for Pool Table Furniture Online

So I did a little research online.

Wow! There is a wide variety of pool table furniture available online, and since most people don't have a local billiards shop nearby, many of the online pool table retailers offer low or even free shipping.

What did I find for pool table furniture?

There are pub tables with luxurious spectator chairs, benches covered in leather, corner tables and half tables that mount onto the wall, poker-top pub tables, dart boards, pool cue racks and more!

The spectator chairs were particularly interesting because they were tall, like bar chairs, which allows guests to watch the games without having to strain to see. Many of them were covered in quality leather and included storage drawers under the seats to store poker winnings or other items. The spectator chairs even had footrests. These elegant leather seated chairs range in price from $189 to $349.

Another pool table furniture possibility was stools that could sit around a pub table, in case you didn't want to spend as much for the chairs. Stools come in a variety of styles, from simple black leather-topped stools to those that had your choice of team logos on top. Stools range in price from $119 to as much as $309.

The spectator benches were a nice surprise, since they offered a handsome leather top with lid that raised to reveal storage for pool cues, balls and other game pieces. The bench even had unique shelves on the sides, to rest drinks and pool cues while waiting your turn.

What Pool Table Furniture Did We Choose, and Why?

We opted for a stand-alone pub table and chairs combination, and a second half-moon pub table set that we could mount to the wall. These two sets included 2 chairs each, giving us 4 total chairs for guests.

We also sprang for one of the leather-topped benches. I particularly liked that the bench came with additional storage. The bench provided seating for 3 additional guests.

One other piece that we decided we need to complete our game room was a pool cue rack. We chose one that mounted to the wall, clearing up more floor space. (When you have little kids over, it helps to have as much off the floor as possible to avoid any accidents!)

I really liked that we could add quite a bit of seating with this pool table furniture and make the room look more like a pub. The room is in our basement, and the lighting is a little darker anyway, so it just made sense to go with a "pub-like" ambiance.

We spent a little more than maybe most would - about $2000 all told, but I am thrilled with how our game room looks.

I am especially thrilled with the fact that guests can come over and relax. I notice that friends are coming over more often now!

Tips and Suggestions for Finding a Good Deal

The first thing I would do is simply examine your space. How much room do you have? Is there room for a whole pub table, or do you just have space for a couple of chairs and maybe a half-moon table? Would a bench be better use of your space?

Shop online. You can get a good idea of what's available simply by looking at pictures and reading reviews.

Many online retailers are offering discount prices and free shipping on pool table furniture. After you find what you want, call them. See if they're offering any special discounts. You can even ask them over the phone, "Is this the best you can do?" Often the salesperson can offer an additional discount if you ask.

Check for clearance items. You can find significant savings with clearance, and online retailers will also list clearance prices on the internet.

Cheap Pool Table - Just the Thing to Enjoy With Friends and Family

Interested in a cheap pool table?

If you're looking for some enjoyment with friends and family while staying at home, a cheap billiards table may be just the ticket.

Now we're not talking about a piece of junk, but a good quality and good value billiards table. There are many available now days in the marketplace, either new or used.

You May Find a Cheap Pool Table in the Pre-Owned Market

Sometimes you're able to find a good deal on a good quality, cheap game table in the used marketplace.

Since a billiards table is a rather large and cumbersome piece of furniture, when peoples' lifestyles change, they often are ready to let someone else have what they may consider to be a burden in their life, and at a reduced price.

Try Shopping for a Cheap Game Table at the Local Member Stores

We have been pleasantly surprised at the number of very nice quality but inexpensive billiards tables available at local pool table shops and even places like Sam's Club and Costco.

Some decisions that you'll need to make when deciding on a cheap game table for your own enjoyment is the style, size and construction of your piece.

There are so many styles of tables that your imagination and taste are your only limitation.

Of course, if you're looking for an inexpensive table, then that will also play a role in what is in your price range.

5 Sizes of Billiards Tables to Consider

There are 5 sizes of game table to consider. One of the main factors in deciding on a size is the room that you are going to put the table.

If your room is larger than about 15 feet by 20 feet, you can get the largest billiards table, but if your room is smaller, like about 15 feet by 19 feet, then a tournament table may be a good fit for you.

You may keep in mind, too, that sometimes these larger tables can be available for a very good price since many people just can't accommodate such a large table.

The next size down is an eight and a half foot oversize regulation billiards table.

For this size table you will want a room about 14 and a half by 18 feet. A regulation piece will need a room about 14 by 18 feet.

And a 7 foot home pool table needs only about a 14 by 18 foot playing area.

Since changing your room can be difficult, before doing much shopping for a cheap pool table, you may want to determine the size of table that you could fit into the space you have before spending much time looking.

The Best Pool Tables Have Slate Tops

The best billiards tables are made with slate tops, for stability and trueness.

Slate, though, is heavy and cumbersome to transport. This may work in your favor if you're looking for a cheap pool table, since this may be the very reason why the piece is selling cheap.

Bear in mind, too, that a slate top table is extremely heavy, so if you do find one, you'll need plenty of help to get it moved to your game room.

Me? Wear a Black Playboy Bunny Costume? Sure - Why Not?

Be sexy, flirty, playful and popular! That's right. The Playboy bunny has become well known due to the Playboy brand and has become an important part of the American pop culture.

It was in February, 1960, when the first Playboy Club opened it's doors in Chicago, Illinois. Can you imagine the buzz around this grand opening? This club catered to ritzy, elite gentlemen who desired a venue for fine dining while admiring the cocktail waitresses all dressed up in their black bunny suits. I bet the tips were great!

The original costume revealed just enough of the bunny's skin to be sexy but did not reveal any "forbidden" body parts. The suit was eventually given a "D" bra cup size and if the bunnies didn't quite fit it, they would have to improvise with whatever stuffing material was available...socks, tissue, cut up bunny tails, etc. In 1962, a bow tie collar and cuffs were added to complete the bunny look. Over the years the leg openings have been altered to achieve that "just right look" for the friendly girl wearing the ears.

A rosette name tag identified the Bunnies at the seated patron's eye level as the bunnies wore it on their right hip. I don't know about you, but at first I may have felt a little uneasy if someone was constantly staring at my right hip.

The bunny costumes were made in twelve colors but the most coveted was the black playboy bunny suit. The bunnies with the most seniority eventually were granted the right to wear the black suit.

How To Make Plans For A Fun 1st Birthday Party

A first birthday is a milestone in any child's life and it is only natural that the parents want to go all out to make it a memorable event. When planning a 1st birthday party for a small child, one thing to keep in mind is the reality that they will have no personal memory of the party aside from the stories, photos and video captured and shared by their parents.

There are no hard rules about the guest list for a birthday party although some people believe that if the child is turning one, one child guest is enough. For every year older the child is, add one guest. This is a good way to make sure that the party does not get out of hand. Since the first birthday is a special occasion, parents may be eager to expand the guest list to include close relatives and friends of the family.

When making out the guest list, let the child's personality dictate how many people to invite. If the child is uncomfortable in a crowd it is best to keep the party small and intimate. A more outgoing baby will not be affected if there are a lot of people running around and hovering over them. Plan the get together for a period of time in between regular nap times. The child will be more alert and in a better mood. The ultimate goal is to have fun and if the guest of honor is cranky and upset, nobody can have fun.

Invitations should be mailed out approximately two weeks prior to the big day. There are plenty of invitation designs available online and at local stationery stores that are specifically designed for a first birthday. A custom printed invitation may be appropriate to mark this milestone birthday, especially since you will probably want to keep one to display in a shadow box or photo album.

There are many different appropriate themes that will work for birthday parties for little ones. Take a cue from their interests. Perhaps they have a favorite storybook or animated show that can be incorporated into the theme. Cowboy and fireman themes are good choices for boys and any little girl will be enchanted with a princess party.

Consider birthday cupcakes instead of ordering an expensive cake. Cupcakes can be decorated to match the party theme and they are easy to serve. There are no utensils needed and no fighting over the corner pieces with the extra frosting.

Sharing this moment with the child in the future will be possible through video or photographs. Having one of the guests handle the task of taking photos will free up the parents to care for the birthday girl or boy and enjoy the day without having to worry about keeping track of the camera. Charge the digital camera battery and verify that there is room on the memory card before the first guest arrives.

How to Start a Fire in a Fireplace

Nothing can ruin a planned romantic evening by the fireplace like fumbling around trying to get the fire started in the first place. Although starting a fire is not overly complex, there are a few pointers to keep in mind.

First, make sure the flue is open! If you do not have it open you will quite rapidly have a smoke filled room! The damper is basically a door that open and seals the entrance to the flue. Usually there is a handle extending from the damper that you use to open or close the flue. You might instead have chains that you pull to open or close the damper. It is helpful to wear a glove when working the handle or chains as they are covered in soot. Having a soot covered hand isn't conducive to romance either.

Next be sure you are using dry wood. Green, or undried wood will burn but it is very much more difficult to get a fire started and keep it burning using it.

The real key to starting a fire is to start small. Place very small twigs and branches, called kindling, on the fire grate. Be a bit generous - it will take more than a few to get things started. In front and behind the kindling place medium sized logs. On top of these and perpendicular place very small logs directly above the kindling and place slightly larger logs to the sides. In this fashion, the kindling will catch fire and burn long enough to ignite the smaller logs. The smaller logs will then ignite the larger one at the sides. Also, by having everything sit atop the medium size logs you are providing room for air to reach the fire as well as providing fuel for the fire to grow larger.

To actually start the fire you can use newspaper but this is not recommended as the ink in the paper can cause build up in the flue and pose a fire hazard. It is best to use firestarter. This is composed of sawdust and wax or similar products. Plus, it burns much longer than newspaper to ensure a good start.

Why Television Sucks

People who are bored, lonely, and have lots of leisure time end up sitting in front of the television set night after night. They can recite TV commercials, the backbone of programming dollars, verbatim. They know the characters of their favorite shows inside and out and can even tell you in mind-numbing detail about the actors' private lives. It's a sad affair.

Educated people with the energy drained from their systems from a hard day's work find themselves sitting in front of the set, too. Is it a form of relaxation or the need to get into a trance in order to unwind before calling it quits for the day and heading off to bed for the night. It does beat hitting the bottle, but it's not much more of a step up the leisure time ladder.

Then there are the quintessential commercials aimed at removing dollars from your budget as they tout this product or that new gizmo. They are, all too often, lethargic, indifferent attempts of marketing new products. Unless, of course, the product was a top seller and has been on the market for ages, in TV commercial circles that's a few weeks, then the commercial is deemed a winner and played nauseously for months on end until the audience finally purchases the item.

Silly sells when the audience is hypnotized into a lethargic stupor of non-concern. This comes in the form of adult animation. The attempt to integrate stupidity into meaningful lives is an act of conscious and apathetic programming. Characters deal with idiotic plots only lunatics and mentally inept people would admit to doing. Yet they survive. How they beat the longevity of more meaningful programming is beyond belief.

Reality TV. There isn't any such thing. Life is reality and no middle to lower income person, sibling, or family member is going to sequester themselves' away on a barren island, even if they have nearby medical help, a helicopter and other lifelines standing by. First the reality of it all is most people couldn't afford it. Second, it's almost too boring. Yet, millions of viewers watch these pathetic attempts at so-called reality programming.

Movies on TV. The best are mostly old movies. The newest movies with understandable plots where murder, violence or inane physiological damage isn't required are almost non-existent. Oldies with a flare such as The Wizard of Oz just don't exist out there in TV cinema.

Innovations in Home Theater Furniture

As people move from analog systems to digital systems, so are innovations in home theater furniture adding flavor to the entertainment industry.

Unlike the traditional or past days where people had to travel far from home to watch a movie or relax through other forms of entertainment, innovations in this area have made this a thing of the past and people are enjoying themselves at their homes. With a variety of choices from major manufacturers, you can get the comfort you desire as you watch the latest production.

Keeping in mind that you are likely to spend not less than two hours in your chairs, you should emphasize on quality & comfort when making your purchase. It isn't a bad idea spending heavily on up-to-date sound & video equipment, but it would be complete spending handsomely on home theater furniture.

One of the major innovations in home theater furniture is the development of furniture that serves all-size people. In the past, the big-sized people had it rough in their efforts to entertain themselves. Most of the furniture was designed for medium-sized people giving a hell of time to big-sized individuals while watching movies or even listening to music. The current chairs, for instance, fit all sizes of people.

One idea are wedge tables for placement between seats for well curving of the rows making everyone feel they have a fantastic seat. The modern home theater furniture has also been enhanced through provision of lighting making the appearance sparkling. Think of cup holders being included in your home theater furniture; it just so amazing.

How to Fight the Winter Blues With Some Plastic Army Men and a Marble

Just about everyone gets the winter blues from one time or another, not only adults who find themselves stuck inside during the winter, but the children also. Usually children love being outside or at least a lot of them do, when your young you don't mind the wind, snow and cold as much as you do when you get older. Also children, can run around in the snow and don't worry about sliding or falling, they just get up, brush off the snow and continue running and playing around. As we get older we find sliding and falling a little scary, it seems it's easier to get hurt or to even break a bone as we age.

Now, this article and the information within it, is geared towards children, but there is no reason a parent cannot join in and do this simple, fun activity with their child. When I was a child, my best friend was a neighbor boy named Johnny. Johnny and I would go fishing, ride on the same School Bus, ride our bikes and go on all kinds of adventures together.

In the winter, when we were both home with nothing to do, we would often call and talk to each other on the telephone, then get together at my house, don't ask me why, but it seemed we mostly met at my parents house, then his, maybe his parents planned that, but I cannot remember anyway, as that was years ago. Back then, and I am talking about the early 1970's, we did not have video games, cell phones, microwaves and even satellite TV was a few years away. Anyway, my friend Johnny would come down and he would often bring a bag of plastic army men.

My parents had a large farm house and it was great growing up there, the house had around 15 rooms including a large living room. When my friend arrived, I would get my bag of plastic army men and we would both go into the living room and sit on the floor. We would sit our army men up facing each others men, leaving around 5-6 feet of empty space in between the opposing armies. Then one of us would start, by rolling a large marble called a shooter marble, towards the opposing enemy army men. As the marble rolled it would knock down sometimes 2 or more enemy soldiers. We took turns doing this into one person had no more standing soldiers, and he was the loser of the game.

Today, playing with a marble and some plastic army men may seem simple or foolish by a lot of children, but I guarantee that it's probably just as fun today as it was all them years also, and some plastic army men and a marble is a lot cheaper then video games or a computer. If you have young children and your worried about them getting the winter blues as winter approaches, buy them some plastic army men and a marble, this fun, but simple little game may be all they need to help fight the winter blues.

Cheers!!
