10 Exciting Adventures for 4 to 8 Year Olds
4 to 8 year olds can be a demanding audience to entertain. Here are some mini-adventures that will keep them entranced.
1. Sit them on your lap and let them drive your car. Have sudden bursts of speed and prepare to be deafened by the squeals of delight. (Health and safety: In no way is this suggestion intended for public roads. You retain the right to grab the steering wheel at any time).
2. Go camping. Always a winner. Pretend you don't know how to put the tent up. Let them burn the sausages over the camp fire (you must have a real fire). Gaze at the stars. Just as they're falling asleep ask if they heard that strange noise outside... Have some sizzling bacon ready for when they wake up and then have an adventure
3. Make something. Getting their hands on DIY tools (with supervision obviously) really excites boys. Repairing or ideally building something grabs their attention and gives them a real sense of achievement.
4. Start a water fight and make sure you lose. Pick a warm day and have the hose, water pistols, buckets, balloons filled with water etc. ready. Aim for everyone to get soaked through.
5. Play a practical joke on their mother. Again the excitement this generates is incredible. Water balloons are always going to succeed. Another great idea is to be seen handling a particularly treasured ornament and then smashing an old chipped glass or cup. The reaction and realisation are both sweet moments.
6. Go to the zoo together. A great adventure especially if the zoo lets the kids handle insects. Build the excitement by getting them to draw the animals they most want to see. Let them run wild and try and keep up.
7. Prepare a treasure hunt. Plant a series of clues and make some of them seem unpleasant e.g. there's a clue in this bag of worms (which is really cold spaghetti). Have lots of mini rewards and then a final treasure prize.
8. Kids love exploring attics, especially grandparent's attics. Finding old toys and books that their mother/father played with gets them going. Discovering old photos has the same effect.
9. Kitchen antics. Making pasta is messy enough for plenty of fun. Using a pasta machine to make tagliatelle adds to the entertainment. Making their own fillings for ravioli also works wonders.
Melting chocolate and mixing in cornflakes or rice crispies will get faces covered in chocolate and smiling kids. Making muffins, especially chocolate chip ones is always a treat too.
10. Is there anything more exciting than waking up to fresh snow? Get the sledges out, build the biggest snowman, have a snowball fight and if there's enough snow make an igloo.
