Life is pretty rough for many people currently so make the most of whatever opportunity there is to lighten the mood. If money is short, which it is for many, economise on the things which do not give lasting pleasure and invest in those things which leave a lasting impression. Did you think a party would be a good investment? Of course it is because people will talk about it for months after. A good party leaves memories which last but fewer people can afford to comfortably afford upwards of £1000 for food, drink and entertainment. The answer is to share the pleasure. Bring a bottle is obvious, just extend the concept. Ask some to bring specific food dishes. Plan what you need, and divide the total out among your guests. One frozen pizza each will not break the bank and neither will a gateau or a prawn ring. Remember 6 cartons of cranberry juice for mixing, 12 bottles of cola, two party platters, 2 large pizzas, 2 large gateaux and loads of chicken drumsticks (all from a frozen food high street specialist). Think in terms of about thirty guests and ask each guest to bring a specific item from the list.

Nothing, absolutely nothing brightens up an event like fancy dress. Something about looking daft or utterly glamorous in a silly way makes us drop our British reserve. So you don't have to spend a lot for my credit crunch party. You only need to concentrate on the fun part, so get your lippy on and watch your house fill up with food, fun and giggling guests.
