Can Christmas Be Stress-Free?

The reality is that the preparation for Christmas is extremely stressful. Weeks are geared towards this one day, which is over in no time at all. Not only finding presents proves to be a major task in itself, travelling can be a real ordeal. Last year we never got to see my parents for Christmas because all flights were cancelled. My poor parents put all this effort in trying to create this special day, only to find that they were alone on Christmas Day.

There are certain things one can do to make Christmas a little less stressful. Plan in advance, long in advance. Make a list of people you want to buy presents for months beforehand to avoid the Christmas madness in the shops and also to spread the costs. Buy as many presents as possible online. If possible, plan your travel in such a way that the cold weather might not jeopardise your journey. This is obviously not always possible.

The most difficult thing is the choice of presents. There are only so many scarves or ties you can buy over the years. Presents have to be unique and even then you don't know whether they will be well received. What do you buy for your eighty-five year old father who has got everything? I guess that I'm not the only one who is facing this problem.

I have recently discovered 'pop art' which will be one of my present this year. Get a photo of somebody in the family and have it turned into 'pop art' on canvas. Search the internet and you will find companies that specialise in this. Send them a photo per email and they will create something amazing. I gave this to a friend for her 50th birthday and she loved it. I will have one made for my parents of their grandchildren. Pictures of family members will always be popular.

Then there are the children. Small children are easy. Toys, toys and more toys and you spend your Christmas putting together Lego. Older children are like adults. I guess it has to be some clothes or the latest gadget. What about the uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers, sisters and god children? It is endless.
