How to Host a Stylish Hen Party on a Budget

Hen parties do not have to mean exotic trips of spa treatments and poolside posing, nor do they have to signify overpriced cocktails and clubbing. Here's how to throw your hen a superb and stylish party on a budget.

Try to arrange your budget beforehand, so all the chicks know what they will be expected to pay. Meet up for a day or an evening and split the costs. This way the party becomes very economical and no one feels out of pocket, which can so easily happen on all-weekend, big budget hen parties.

Afternoon tea is a chic and cheap way to kick off the celebrations. Serve baby eclairs, cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off, a pot of tea and pink Cava on ice. For an authentic experience, ask each guest to being some vintage crockery. Charity shops and boot sales are great places to find authentic pieces at a bargain price. Or you can opt for some affordable vintage inspired china which is currently a huge trend.

Or if weather permits, spend a penny-saving afternoon in the great outdoors, playing rounders and running three-legged races. Bring blankets and lay out a picnic. Ask each chick to bring homemade cakes and sandwiches. Hang bunting from the trees and don't forget your MP3 player full of the bride-to-be's favourite party tunes.

A decadent dinner party is equally an attractive option that doesn't have to break the bank. Delegate a dish or drink for everyone to bring and round things off with silly games and a spot of after dinner dancing.

Liaise in advance with the groom, asking him a series of questions for a 'Mr & Mrs' style quiz that you can all play with the hen. Offer her a series of multiple choice answers which she must answer correctly or else pay a little forfeit.

Ask each lady to bring an inexpensive item wrapped up to offer as a gift for the hen. This can be anything from a button to a blade of grass, so long as it symbolises a special memory or funny story that you share with the hen. Place all the gifts in a 'Memory Box' for the hen to unwrap and recount the special story, guessing which gift is from whom. This is a lovely way to treat the bride, a great ice-breaker and the perfect way for those who don't know each other too well to understand how everyone is related to the bride-to-be.

An additional cheap option is to take a Polaroid camera to record the antics. Stick your pictures in a scrap book and ask each hen to write comments next to them for a fun reminder.

There is no need to plan too many activities. That way, everyone will have the chance to relax and catch up which is a treat in itself.
