Why Happily Ever After Is Not a Fairy Tale

Children of today must be protected from the abundance of wicked and horrible news and crises that are reported by the minute every day on the news channels and radio and TV stations around the world. There is no end to the volume of bad news, that's for sure. But how can we do this? For some poor unfortunate people or groups, happily ever after is simply not an option.

Well, you cannot stop children viewing television, so what's the answer?

The most rigid method is simply not to have a television in house. This of course does not allow the kids, or any one else for that matter to watch programs of interest to both children and adults. And of course they can always watch TV at a friend's house.

So, the answer appears to be one of education and selective viewing strategies. But by whom?

By educating your children to appreciate that all TV programs are not worthwhile, sounds easy, but that's not true either.

The authorities have what is known as a nine o'clock watershed, whereby programs of an adult nature can be shown only after nine o,clock in the evening. That's OK, but what about the dubious programs before nine o,clock, such as the news bulletins and breaking news. That's a bit like a lottery.

It seems reasonable to say that children should watch children's programs, and that they must be trained to be selective in their viewing. Well, that's a good start, providing that you begin at an early enough age, when kids are able to make choices. It really is all about the old adage; Lead by example. Talk to them about the programs they would like to watch, get involved and they too will start to do the same.

Needless to say this topic is a minefield. Every child is different but it is worthwhile to try to educate your little ones, and maybe, just maybe they will carry their lessons forward in life and become a selective viewer of television programs, as well. It that fails you can always try Plan B below.
