The Cake Stand Phenomenon

The past few years have seen the resurgence of the English traditional high tea and the most important ingredient of any tea table is the tiered cake stand. Usually made of china and decorated in flowers these tiered stands were last popular in the 50's when tea parties were all the rage. Well afternoon tea is back on the menu and these cake stands are now being seen everywhere you look, from shop windows to magazine articles and even on TV.

It's hardly surprising as the tiered cake stand is actually a very simple yet very useful addition to your tea table. Traditionally a tea table would have been quite small allowing two people to sit and enjoy a cup of tea and selection of cakes, biscuits or sandwiches. With a rather small table, a tiered cake stand would allow more space for arranging the cakes and also separating different cakes onto different tiers of the stand. Not only useful, this also looks attractive and stylish as a centrepiece to your table.

Now days cupcakes are all the rage and a selection of cupcakes displayed on a tiered cake stand looks absolutely superb at any tea party. This kind of thing is now very popular at children's birthday parties with individual cupcakes being given out for each child to take home rather than having to slice up a birthday cake into the correct amount of segments.

The tiered stand has always been a popular choice for wedding cakes, usually each tier comprising of one large piece of cake getting smaller with each tier upwards. Some very large wedding cakes being up to 7 tiers tall to ensure enough cake for every guest. However the individual cupcake idea is now very popular for large weddings ensuring each guest has an equal amount of cake.
