Under Pressure, Over Surrender
How many days in this life do we feel "under pressure"? I WISH it was only an old David Bowie/Queen song. But in reality "under pressure" is how most of us live day in and day out. We wake up, sometimes refreshed, only to find ourselves within minutes of the day thinking about all the 'pressures' of the day. Mercy!
The day begins and you start to wonder 'what to wear' - pressure! Then you remember the issues you are having with the car or cars (with teenagers) and, PRESSURE! Then you stop and think for a minute about how much 'money is in the account' - pressure! Then you are on your way to work and remember you have to have those 2 or 3 conversations or that someone wants to have one with you - pressure! Then work winds up and you start thinking about 'what's for dinner, who will cook tonight, what's the plan this evening" - pressure! Then you get the mail...oh man, the mail: bills, bills, notices, bills, notices, junk mail to try to sell you something - pressure! Then you start thinking about your 'bank account' again on the way back from the mailbox and - pressure!
Ahhh, finally home! So you walk in and immediately about 10 things hit you; from what you see around the house to what the kids have to say to what your spouse says (or doesn't say) to what hasn't been done to what needs to be done, etc....pressure!
You try to enjoy your very short time at night and yet your mind continues to Zoom towards the things that are bothering you in life. And you think, "WHO will rescue me from this deathly hollow?" Let me share with you a little trick:
Someone (a very wise person) once told me "Choose your battles, not everything is worth the fight". I've thought about this a ton and come to the decision that not every little thing that bothers me or makes me feel 'under pressure' is worth it; that some things that I feel and put me under pressure must simply be SURRENDERED. Instead of dwelling on them I need to decide which pressure are "worth" working on and which are only there to tweak and warp my mind. That's how I choose my daily battles.
Then I surrender! I mean really surrender. There are lots of ways to surrender. Today Leslie and I went for a long walk and I talked about everything that was pressuring me/us. I wasn't giving it to her but releasing it to the air; from my heart and mind to the air (to God for those of you so willing). Sometimes I just pray or meditate and surrender it. Often times I just simply say "too much, I can't do all this, away with you, I surrender". Sometimes like in a battle I simply just raise my hands and say "I surrender".
This is NOT defeat, this is a powerful tool to decide what's important and worth dealing with now and what I can save for later. I will always be under some kind of pressure; that's what refines me. But it's MY choice to be overwhelmed or to surrender what I can't control or overcome right now. I am being incredibly responsible to put some of it away for now. I need to free my mind/heart for others under pressure. Until next time....chillax!
